HISTORY (OFFICE OF PRESS REGISTRAR) OPR

Office of Press Registrar established under Press, Newspaper, News Agencies and Books Registration, Ordinance 2002 in order to regulate and facilitate Print Media. The Office of Press Registrar started working since 2002 but initially this office dealt only with cross checking of data, compiled information received from all four Provinces, Islamabad, AJK and Northern Areas and issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to DGPR’s for further allotment of title in favour of applicant. Proper functioning started with appointment of first Press Registrar in 2006. At that time provisional Registration Certificates were issued to the publications.

In 2009, Office of the Press Registrar got approved its rules namely Press, Newspapers, News Agencies and Books Registration Rules – 2009 published in the gazette of Pakistan. According to these rules this office start issuance of NOC's and validity of Registration Certificate for three years was defined. 

15 Press Registrars has served in this office (See list of Press Registrar) from 2007-2021.  Mr. Tariq Mahmood, is 15th,  Press Registrar from 15.07.2021.
